With time, Avni’s depression got worse. Her friends and family were her lifeline, and were doing everything in their power to help her. Her parents even consulted a doctor who gave her anti-depressants after a diagnosis and asked her to come for regular therapy sessions. But it was a constant battle between her will and her anxieties. Sadly, her anxieties always overpowered everything else.

She put on a smiling face for everyone to see, while the storm continued to rage inside her, destroying her bit by bit. She tried to put on a brave front for her parents, but some days she didn’t even have the energy to fake a smile. She didn’t want people to see her as a miserable person. She knew she was strong, but why did she always feel so damn weak? Nothing about her life seemed to be going right. Her inner demons took her down further and further into the abyss.

It was another one of those nights when she woke up with a fright. She had had a nightmare and was shivering and crying. Her mom, who had begun to sleep with her, quickly fetched her a glass of water. Her dad came into the room, hearing her loud wails.

‘Why are you taking so much stress? Do you want to take a break from college?’

‘I don’t know, Dad.’

Her dad held her hand and said, ‘You always asked us why we live a carefree life, right?’ For precisely this reason. See what exam pressure has done to you. You can’t let it snatch your happiness like this. There are more things to life than just this. Look how we’ve found a way to find relief from our worries. Be it our obsession for games or making videos, they act as stress busters.’

Her mom added, ‘He is right. Being carefree isn’t a bad thing if you aren’t careless. We realized it way too early, and gradually cultivated an attitude that didn’t take the fun away from our lives. There will be phases where you feel low and that’s absolutely fine, but as long as you keep yourself involved in something that keeps you busy, something that makes you feel happy and alive, things will eventually be fine.’

‘Do you want to go on a vacation?’ her dad suggested.

‘No Dad, I am okay. I will take some time, that’s all. I have accepted that Nani is gone forever. I have told myself I will do better in the exams the next time, but this feeling of constant sadness just doesn’t leave me. I try hard to keep myself motivated, and I wish I could get over things as easily as you guys, but it’s not so easy. Anyway, all I can say is that I’m trying.’

The next day she went to college in a slightly better mood. It was a lecture on communication skills, and each student was made to give a presentation elaborating on the ‘7Cs in business correspondence’. Bani was late and the professor saw her entering the lecture hall from the back door.
