With time, Avniâs depression got worse. Her friends and family were her lifeline, and were doing everything in their power to help her. Her parents even consulted a doctor who gave her anti-depressants after a diagnosis and asked her to come for regular therapy sessions. But it was a constant battle between her will and her anxieties. Sadly, her anxieties always overpowered everything else.
She put on a smiling face for everyone to see, while the storm continued to rage inside her, destroying her bit by bit. She tried to put on a brave front for her parents, but some days she didnât even have the energy to fake a smile. She didnât want people to see her as a miserable person. She knew she was strong, but why did she always feel so damn weak? Nothing about her life seemed to be going right. Her inner demons took her down further and further into the abyss.
It was another one of those nights when she woke up with a fright. She had had a nightmare and was shivering and crying. Her mom, who had begun to sleep with her, quickly fetched her a glass of water. Her dad came into the room, hearing her loud wails.
âWhy are you taking so much stress? Do you want to take a break from college?â
âI donât know, Dad.â
Her dad held her hand and said, âYou always asked us why we live a carefree life, right?â For precisely this reason. See what exam pressure has done to you. You canât let it snatch your happiness like this. There are more things to life than just this. Look how weâve found a way to find relief from our worries. Be it our obsession for games or making videos, they act as stress busters.â
Her mom added, âHe is right. Being carefree isnât a bad thing if you arenât careless. We realized it way too early, and gradually cultivated an attitude that didnât take the fun away from our lives. There will be phases where you feel low and thatâs absolutely fine, but as long as you keep yourself involved in something that keeps you busy, something that makes you feel happy and alive, things will eventually be fine.â
âDo you want to go on a vacation?â her dad suggested.
âNo Dad, I am okay. I will take some time, thatâs all. I have accepted that Nani is gone forever. I have told myself I will do better in the exams the next time, but this feeling of constant sadness just doesnât leave me. I try hard to keep myself motivated, and I wish I could get over things as easily as you guys, but itâs not so easy. Anyway, all I can say is that Iâm trying.â
The next day she went to college in a slightly better mood. It was a lecture on communication skills, and each student was made to give a presentation elaborating on the â7Cs in business correspondenceâ. Bani was late and the professor saw her entering the lecture hall from the back door.
